Guidelines & Proforma for MGMI Awards of Excellence (2022-23)

1. Preamble

The Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI), established in 1906, has been very active in promoting education and training in the fields of Mining, Geology and Metallurgy right from its inception. To encourage young minds and achievers in these fields several Awards and Medals were instituted over the past more than 100 years. Though initially there were only a few Awards, over a period of time the number increased and in 2019 there were as many as 16 Awards. However, it was observed that in last few years the response for the Awards were not as per expectations. Hence, after lot of deliberations at different levels it was decided to reduce the number of Awards. It was further decided to give wide publicity about the awards with better citation and increased Award money to make the awards more attractive.

2. Categories

There are three categories of MGMI awards of Excellence:

  • 2.1 MGMI Award of Excellence for Coal Mining - for outstanding contribution in the Coal Mining Industry (Nominations closed);
  • 2.2 MGMI Award of Excellence for Non-Coal Mining - for outstanding contribution in Mining Industry other than coal. (Last date of receiving nomiations extended to 15th September, 2023) ;
  • 2.3 MGMI Award of Excellence for Earth Sciences/Mineral Engineering - for outstanding contribution in any Branch of Earth Science or Mineral Engineering (Nominations closed);

Note: The fourth award, as decided by the MGMI Council is The Best Technical Paper Award to be selected from the papers published in MGMI Transactions for every Calendar Year. A separate guideline has been prepared for this award.

3. Eligibility For MGMI Awards Of Excellence

  • 3.1 Any citizen of India who is a professionally qualified Mining engineer/Metallurgist/Mineral engineer/Geo-scientist/ Environmentalist/ Technologist/ Academician, having a meritorious background with significant contribution in the fields specified in Clauses-2.1, 2.2 & 2.3 of these Guidelines shall be eligible for consideration of these Awards.
  • 3.2 The awards under Clauses-2.1, 2.2 & 2.3 shall be given on the basis of contributions made through work done for most part in India, principally in the past ten years preceding 31st March of the year of the awards.
  • 3. 3 For the above Awards, the age limit is 65 years as on 31st March of the year for which the Awards are given. However, in exceptional cases age relaxation may be considered.

Note: The fourth award, as decided by the MGMI Council is The Best Technical Paper Award to be selected from the papers published in MGMI Transactions for every Calendar Year. A separate guideline has been prepared for this award.

4. Awards

Each award of Excellence would be in the form of a Certificate with Citation and a Cash Prize of Rs 50,000.00 (Rupees Fifty Thousand) only, the amount may change from time to time depending on the decision of the Council of MGMI.

5. Nominations

  • 5.1 Nominations for the Award for Excellence in the fields of Non-coal Mining can be made by any MGMI awardee/ MGMI Council Member/the Head of Institution/Government Department, University, research entity or industry in the prescribed format (Download Annexure I).
  • 5.2 A certificate is required from the Head of Institution / Head of Department / Supervisory Officer/Industry Head stating that the work mentioned in the nomination form has been done by the nominee.
  • 5.3 Any person who has received any MGMI Award of Excellence earlier would not be considered again.
  • 5.4 Nominations made in any format other than the prescribed one and nomination received beyond the stipulated date and time as well as incomplete nominations will not be considered. Representations in this regard will not be entertained.

6. Selection Procedure

  • 6.1 The Selection Committees for the Awards will be constituted with the approval of the Council of MGMI. Each Committee will have 5 members with a Chairman and 3 other members from the Council or experts in the subjects. Honorary Secretary of the MGMI will be the Member Secretary in each of these Committees. No Member of the Selection Committee shall be eligible for an MGMI award of Excellence for that particular year.
  • 6.2 The composition of various selection committees, proceedings of the meetings and the procedure for consideration of the nominations, will be kept confidential.
  • 6.3 The decision of the Award Selection Committee shall be placed before the Council of MGMI for its approval.
  • 6.4 The recommendations of the Award Selection Committee after approval by the MGMI Council will be final. Any further communication in this regard will not be entertained.
  • 6.5 The Awards shall be conferred on the candidates approved by the Council during the Annual General Meeting of MGMI with a Certificate and cash Prize by the President of MGMI.
  • 6.6 Canvassing in any form by a candidate during the selection procedure would lead to permanent disqualification for any MGMI award.

7. Schedule

Last date of receiving of nomination forms complete in all respect for Award of Excellence for Non-coal Mining has been extended to: 15.09.2023 (Fifteenth September, Two Thousand and Twenty Three) by 4:00 PM.

Two copies of the nomination in the prescribed format (Download Annexure I) in case of hard copy or a digital copy (filled up form, photographs and enclosures through email ) have to be sent before the last date and time mentioned in the advertisement to MGMI Office at the following address given below:
